HUD Buyer Guide: How to Choose a Head-Up Display for Your Car

A Head-Up Display (HUD) projects your speed, navigation, and alerts directly onto your windshield — so your eyes stay on the road. Once considered a luxury feature, HUDs are now affordable and easy to install in any car. Here's what to look for.

1. OBD2 vs. GPS HUDs

There are two main types:

  • OBD2 HUDs plug into your car's OBD2 port (usually under the dashboard). They read real-time data directly from your car's ECU — speed, RPM, engine temperature, fault codes. More accurate and feature-rich.
  • GPS HUDs use satellite positioning to calculate speed. No OBD2 port needed — works in any car, including older models. Slightly less accurate but simpler to set up.

2. Display Size & Brightness

Look for a display of at least 5 inches for comfortable reading while driving. More importantly, brightness matters enormously in Saudi Arabia — look for units rated at 10,000+ nits or with auto-brightness adjustment to remain visible in direct sunlight.

3. What Data Does It Show?

A good HUD should display:

  • Current speed (km/h)
  • Speed limit warnings
  • Turn-by-turn navigation (when connected to phone)
  • Engine RPM and temperature (OBD2 models)
  • Fault code alerts
  • Time and compass

4. Reflective Film vs. Combiner Plate

Some HUDs project onto a reflective film you stick to your windshield. Others use a combiner plate (a small transparent screen that folds up). Combiner plates give sharper images; reflective film gives a cleaner look. Both work well.

5. Installation

Most HUDs are plug-and-play — connect to OBD2 or power via USB, position on the dashboard, and you're done. No permanent modifications needed.

6. App Connectivity

Some premium HUDs connect to your phone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to display navigation from Google Maps or Waze — very useful for Saudi Arabia's road network.

7. Heat Resistance

Dashboard temperatures in Saudi Arabia can exceed 80°C in summer. Choose a HUD with a high-temperature rating and avoid leaving it on the dashboard when parked in direct sun.
